At five o'clock I was in the Hotel Crillon, waitingÂ
for Brett. She was not there, so I sat down andÂ
wrote some letters. They were not very good lettersÂ
but I hoped their being on Crillon stationery wouldÂ
help them. Brett did not turn up, so about quarterÂ
to six I went down to the bar and had a Jack RoseÂ
with George the barman.

We sat in a corner of the bar at Victorâs andÂ
drank gimlets. âThey donât know how to makeÂ
them here,â [Lennox] said. What they call aÂ
gimlet is just some lime or lemon juice, andÂ
gin with a dash of sugar and bitters. A realÂ
gimlet is half gin and half Roseâs Lime JuiceÂ
and nothing else.

Dean and I had ended up with a colored guyÂ

Punch
Ingredients
1 pint of rum
1 wine-glass of brandy
1 cup of sugar
1 liter / quart of boiling water
3Â lemons

To divert his thoughts from this melancholyÂ
subject, I informed Mr. Micawber that I reliedÂ
upon him for a bowl of punch, and led him toÂ
the lemons. His recent despondency, not to sayÂ
despair, was gone in a moment. I never sawÂ
a man so thoroughly enjoy himself amid theÂ
fragrance of lemon-peel and sugar, the odour ofÂ
burning rum, and the steam of boiling water.
Peel lemons, adding peels to sugar is aÂ
large, heat-proof crockpot with a lid (doÂ
not use glass or plastic). Pour brandy andÂ
rum into the bowl. Heat mixture for 3-4Â
minutes on the stove. Once heated, add aÂ
quart of boiling water and squeeze in theÂ
juice from the lemons. Allow to simmerÂ
for 10-15 minutes, cool slightly, and serve.
