Andrés Lhima
Andrés Lhima is a Mexican industrial designer with a figurative, playful and functional style.
His products have been sold and exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art store in New York (MoMA Design Store N.Y. and Tokyo) at the Maison & Objet and More fair in Paris and museum stores in Mexico such as the Museo Nacional de Antropología, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey (MARCO), Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca (MACO), Museo Amparo, Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC), Museo de Artes y Diseño Franz Mayer, Museo del Objeto del Objeto (MODO), Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Rufino Tamayo and at the emblematic Casa Estudio of architect Luis Barragán.
One of his first designs, Fidencio Sillón, was selected to be part of the prestigious design collection of the Vitra Design Museum in Germany, being the only Mexican designer with this distinction.
He was selected to exhibit his work at Salone Satellite as part of the 60th anniversary of Salone del Mobile in Milan, Italy, where he presented the Mama Canguro sugar bowl. At the same event, he was included in the Satellite Awards competition with his emblematic Fidencio Armchair, which is also part -along with his Penguin vases- of the Salone Satellite collection.
His work has been exhibited in museums in Mexico, Austria, France, China and the United States such as the Denver Art Museum, Museum of Arts and Design in New York (MAD), The Corcoran Gallery of Art and Design in Washington D.C., the Museum of Crafts and Popular Art (CAFAM) in Los Angeles California, the Museum of Contemporary Art 516 Arts in Albuquerque New Mexico in the United States, The Beijing Art Museum in China, El Dorado Lille 3000 event in France, the Universal Joanneum Museum in Graz Austria, the Franz Mayer Museum of Art and Design, National Museum of Art of the INBA (MUNAL), University Museum of Contemporary Art (MUCA), National Museum of Anthropology, Museum of Contemporary Art Rufino Tamayo, the Nishizawa Gallery and the José Luis Benlliure Gallery in Mexico City.
Two of his designs, Fidencio Sillón and Jarrito, are part of the permanent collection "World Wide Things Collection" which brings together the good design of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.
He has participated in the design fairs Milan Design Week in Italy, DesignTo in Toronto Canada, Beijing Design Week, Suzhou Design Week in China, Design Week Mexico, Abierto Mexicano de Diseño in Mexico.
He has obtained recognitions such as first place in the “Alessi in Love” competition with the Mamá Canguro sugar bowl, the award for best design given by the public in the “Dutch Design Competition” with the Tulipán cutlery set, first place in the “Mexico Design Challenge” for the American company Kikkerland with the Luchador Destapador collection, which is a best seller of the brand, “Bebedero para espacios exteriores de la U.N.A.M.” with the Penca water dispenser and the “National Award in Stainless Steel” with the Pájaro Carpintero hammer proposal, he was also selected by the MoMA New York store with his piece Fidencio Sillón to be part of the event "Destination Mexico", which brought together the most representative designs of Mexico to be sold in said store.
He is currently Director of the Industrial Design and Product Development program at the Centro de Estudios Superiores de Diseño de Monterrey (CEDIM).
He has been a professor at the Universidad Iberoamericana Campus Puebla, at the Centro de Estudios Superiores de Diseño de Monterrey (CEDIM) and at ISTHMUS - School of Architecture and Design of Latin America and the Caribbean based in Panama and an evaluator advisor for different universities in Mexico in the Bachelor of Industrial Design such as the Universidad Anáhuac Mayab in Mérida Yucatán.
